Back-To-School Shopping Trends In 2017

Your children and your wallet may be dreading it, but its back to school time.

You've probably noticed the displays up at your favorite stores.  Families with elementary through high school students will spend an average of just under $700 this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Overall, total spending for school and college combined is projected to reach $83.6 billion, a more than 10 percent increase from last year's $75.8 billion.

To help cut costs, experts recommend looking for bargains.  If you're looking for big ticket items like computers, don't be afraid to buy used or refurbished.

As for where must customers will make purchases, a recent Deloitte survey found 81 percent of respondent plan to shop at mass merchants.  Off-price stores are the target for 28 percent of people.  This year, clothing and accessories are expected to account for 55 percent of families' spending, pulling primarily from school supplies and computers.
