Sanford Health, Hy-Vee and First PREMIER Bank, along with KELOLAND Media Group, want to give away eight scholarships to student-athletes who demonstrate great character in their communities. It's all thanks to Legends For Kids and the scholarship fund keeps growing.
Legends camps and clinics have been making a difference for KELOLAND kids for years. Recently, the program expanded from free athletic instruction to include college scholarships.
"Every year we try to grow the event. So there's no reason not to try to grow our scholarship program," Coleman said.
Brad Coleman with Sanford Health says the Legends For Kids Scholarship Fund has handed out $65,000 in two years. This year, eight deserving student-athletes will get a piece of a $40,000 pie.
"This scholarship is not about getting the best stud athlete. Whether it's basketball, football, baseball, it doesn't matter. It's about getting the good kids. Kids that are involved, not only in athletics, but also very involved in their school, their community, their church," Coleman said.
Time is running out to apply
. The deadline is this Friday at 5 p.m. Students or their parents can find the form on the Legends For Kids website but they'll need a recommendation as well.
"Teachers, school administrators, athletic directors, coaches, those are the ones that have to nominate these kids for the scholarship. Those are the ones that know the kids best. We think we're going to find another great class of scholarship winners again this year," Farmer said.
And those winners will have an extra $5,000 to use towards tuition, books and housing when they head off to college.
"We'd like to get as many applications as we can," Coleman said.
