But how about preparing the meal you just brought home?
Cooking a meal from scratch takes time, patience and sometimes more ingredients than you have in the cupboard.
"I'm not really on a budget but it just helps a lot with having all the ingredients," Lisa Groenewold said.
Groenewold says since subscribing to a weekly meal-kit delivery service, she finds portion control and eating organic a lot easier.
"I just think it's convenient. I like the fact that sometimes when you look at recipes it's got herbs or spices that you might not have, and its got everything in it," Groenewold said.
And you don't have to be a chef either. Meal kits come with step by step instructions, making it hard to mess up.
There's a meal-kit option for everyone, ranging from vegetarian options, to gourmet meals, to educational kits to help those learning how to cook better.
"You're getting a good source of vegetables, your protein, and you're just getting more balance, and it brings you back around the table too. So, you are having a home-cooked meal," Registered dietitian Amanda Lambrechts said.
A typical kit feeds 2-4 people. You can order weekly or monthly subscriptions. There are also meal kits ready for pick-up at your local grocery store.
For those on a budget, meal kits can end up being more cost efficient.
"I certainly think they can be an affordable option for you and the nice thing about them is you're not having any food waste because you're given the exact amount," Lambrechts said.
