Nurses Appreciation Week

This week nurses nationwide are being celebrated for national nurses week.

But it's not just their patients who are thankful.

Every year beginning on May 6 to the 12, nurses are celebrated across the country.

This years theme is Inspire, Innovate, Influence.

"It's amazing. We don't get appreciated all the time so when we have that week to, you know be appreciated it's really nice," Katie Reit with Sanford Health said.

Reit decided she wanted to become a pediatric nurse because of her love for helping kids.

"I think nurses really care for everybody they take care of. Sometimes it's behind the scenes and we're not always in the room, and I think it's a huge team aspect," Reit said.

Dr. Tracy Jones with Sanford Health says it's hard to imagine what it would be like in the workplace without a nurse.

"The nurses are usually the first medical provider that get to see our patients, assess the situation, decide if they need more immediate attention," Jones said.

Jones says this week is important to highlight the vital role nurses play not only in a patient's life, but a doctor's as well.

"Without having them here to do the things that are necessary, whether that's rooming the patients, taking the vitals, doing the vaccines. You know, we just wouldn't be able to function without them," Jones said.

Reit says while she wouldn't trade her job for anything, some days come with challenges.

"Parents you know, concerned about their kids being sick, and just being there to support them I think is just a challenge that you have to be understanding," Reit said.

In addition to all the help with patients, Jones says the companionship with Reit makes for a quick work day.

"Katie and I have a fantastic working relationship. It's a joy to come to work and be able to enjoy the colleagues that you work with," Jones said.

"It makes me feel wonderful. Yea, I love being able to have an impact in somebody's life," Reit said.

A celebration worth having.
