Running In Groups

Having a workout buddy can help hold you accountable while also making working out more fun.

That's why many are choosing group fitness events and classes as their route to staying in shape.

It's easy to make excuses when it's time to hit the gym, but saying no gets harder when it's to someone else.

"If I have someone running with me I'm up, guaranteed and I'm out the door. So, it definitely helps," Nathan Schwab said.

Long time runner Schwab says group exercise gives him more motivation than he would get from going at it alone.

"I strive to run with people more often than run by myself, yea definitely," Schwab said.

Schwab says through group exercise he's made new friends and finds that his workouts sometimes end up longer than planned.

Sports nuerophyschologist Dr. Kate Higgins says the social impact is huge.

"You're doing a hard workout and having people around you to support you makes that a little easier. It can be distracting, it can be encouraging to see other people going through that same experience," Higgins said.

If you're not sure where to begin, Sioux Falls residents will have a handful of options to get involved in group fitness activities this weekend.

The Sioux Falls Area Running Club's annual picnic and run as well as the Falls Area Bicyclists Trail Challenge are just a couple of  ways you can test out your fitness in a group.

"It's not a race this weekend, it's a run. So there's no pressure and I think for a new runner they can experience pressure regardless of whether or not they're being timed," Higgins.

Schwab says intimidation should be left at home, and activities like these are easy ways to step outside of your comfort zone and expand your fitness routine.

"You know everybody's got to start somewhere. So just showing up, meeting some new people, letting everyone know where you're at in your running life," Schwab said.
