For many of us, setting up a doctor's appointment and getting there is simple. But for others, finding transportation can seem impossible.
"Many of our patients across our communities, especially our underserved populations, the elderly, at risk, low-income populations, they rely on public transportation" Meghan Goldammer with Sanford Health said.
That's why Sanford Health in Sioux Falls is partnering with Lyft to offer patients an affordable ride to and from appointments.
"This allows Sanford to request the ride for the patient. The Lyft driver on that end doesn't know that this is being requested through Sanford," Goldammer said.
Allowing patients to keep their ride information private.
"I think it's a great option for our patients. They're really looking for convenience and something that will work with their schedule, their pickup and drop-off points so this is exactly that for them," Goldammer said.
The service is meant strictly for non-emergency visits, and Goldammer says eligibility will be determined during a patient-doctor visit.
"Really any of our patients that have transportation issues will be eligible," Goldammer said.
Patients will receive a doctor requested Lyft ride, but the service doesn't end there.
"The Lyft can take them from their house to their appointment, from their appointment to pick up their prescription and back home again. So, it's really all around for their health care needs," Goldammer said.
The program is expected to begin in just a few weeks.
"One of the things we love about this collaboration with Lyft is that it's just a safe reliable, affordable solution to our patients to get to point A and point B," Goldammer said.
The Lyft app is available for free through both the Google Play and Apple app store.
