Giving Instead Of Getting

There's a new trend in birthday parties that may surprise you. We stopped by one birthday this weekend to show you why it's becoming a less self-centered event, even for the youngest kids.

A kid's birthday party is usually full of cake, friends and presents.  One little girl got some unusual gifts this weekend.

"Two bags of dog food and one jar of peanut butter," eight-year-old Nikole said.

These gifts aren't the sign of a bad friend. In fact, Nikole was just doing what her friend Lily asked.

"I'm an animal lover and I decided that I just want to help the animals," Lily Coulter, birthday giver, said.

Coulter turned eight-years-old this weekend.  Instead of the traditional piles of presents for herself, she took a cue from some friends and asked for donations instead. She decided to donate her party to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society after hearing about their needs.

"I actually learned it from the news," Lily said.

Thanks to her party guests and her mom's coworkers, Lily was able to drop off about $600 worth of supplies to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. It is a gift her friends and family are quite proud of.

"I guess the whole thing is kind of overwhelming because we didn't really think it would turn into this big thing that it has. I mean, it's just amazing that one person can make a big difference," Ann Coulter, Lily's mom, said.

"Please help the animals because you will be saving their lives," Lily said.

Lily says she wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up.
