Vietnam Veterans Battling Illnesses Make Midwest Honor Flight

Nine Vietnam Veterans made the trip to Washington, D.C., on Midwest Honor Flight this week.

Many of them put on Mission 2 because they were battling illness. Larry Bylsma from Hull, IA, is facing leukemia. The former Air Force jet engine mechanic says the trip is extra special because he doesn't know how much longer he'll be around. He is grateful for all the people who are thanking him for his service to the country. It wasn't the same environment decades ago.

"I got asked within a week after I came back if I was through killing babies. That didn't sit right," Bylsma said. "I guess we'll just have to wait and see. As long as you get a terminal illness and you can stay with it, it's good."

Coming up tonight on KELOLAND News, hear from other Vietnam Veterans battling illness and see what it was like for them to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
