HSWR: Nick Casperson's Final Quest

Beresford, SD

Beresford senior Nick Casperson is a defending class "B" wrestling champion, but will face a unique challenge at this week's state "A" tournament.

Nick Casperson is the reigning class "B" champion at 182 pounds.  During the offseason, Beresford/Alcester-Hudson made the move to class "A", but Casperson hasn't missed a beat.

"It was really nice just to get the title out of the way and now I can move forward from there too," Casperson said.

Casperson is 34-0 on the season, and the two-seed in this week's state "A" tournament.  He's a perfect 81-0 over the past two seasons, though it was a loss that helped spark the streak.

"My sophomore year, losing first round at state and then having, that was pretty, I don't know, I don't like to talk about that much but that has given me the most motivation to move forward and get better," Casperson said.

So now how does he move forward and get better?

"All year I've been moving up to 220 and now I guess I feel like the biggest challenge for me would be go all the way up to heavyweight," Casperson said.

"He wrestled most of the year at 195 but he would jump up to 220 at any given chance to you know wrestle better opponents. Now, he's going up to 285 to wrestle arguably the best in the state," Chestnut said.

Casperson will put his undefeated record on the line for an opportunity to face Chamberlain sophomore Nash Hutmacher, who's undefeated and number one at 285 pounds.

"He could definitely take the easy way out and stay at 195 and probably give himself an easier shot at winning a state title but that's not what he wants. He wants to push himself and kind of go out with a chance to do something big," Chestnut said.

Casperson's quest begins Friday.

Casperson and Hutmacher will each have to advance to the finals for a chance to meet at state.  Win or lose, Casperson plans to continue his wrestling career at Fresno State.
