Storm Center Update - PM Tuesday June 12

We’ve had a narrow but persistent band of clouds over Sioux Falls and I-29 in SE KELOLAND… while the vast majority of the area saw bright sunshine. Temperatures were a little below normal, in the low to mid 70s in most locations.

Tonight we expect that last band to exit to the east, so skies should be clear. With a light westerly breeze, we don’t anticipate any fog. Lows will be in the upper 40s to the north and low 50s in the south.

 forecast tonight

Skies will be clear to partly cloudy tomorrow, with a band of clouds moving in from the southwest. Temperatures will return to above-normal readings in the low 80s East River, and mid 80s in the west.

 forecast tomorrow

The area of I-90 to the south – including Sioux Falls – could get some early morning rainfall late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Skies will be mostly sunny the rest of the day. With a warm air mass moving in, highs will be in the upper 80s to low 90s. Rapid City could reach the mid 90s. Southerly winds could be a bit breezy.

 Thursday forecast

Friday looks partly cloudy and hot. With a partly cloudy sky, highs will be in the low 90s. Rapid City will be breezy and a little cooler, in the mid 80s.

The Father’s Day weekend looks warm – and in some places – wet. Saturday’s highs will be in the low 90s, and that could lead to some thunderstorms Saturday afternoon evening in western and northern South Dakota. The chances for thunder in Sioux Falls and SE KELOLAND look fairly minimal. On Sunday, we’ll have a chance of rain across the region. We could see some areas of heavy rainfall, with early projections putting the heaviest rain in northern and western South Dakota.

The rainfall chances will continue into Monday, as cooler air drops temperatures back into the upper 70s. Then skies should clear on Tuesday, with temperatures near- or below-normal in the mid 70s.

Forecast models still suggest gradual warming, leading temperatures above-normal values for the second half of next week.
