Storm Center Update- Friday PM, January 12th

We’ve seen some snow showers moving NW to SE through KELOLAND, with little or no accumulation. Otherwise we’ve had a mostly cloudy sky, and temperatures have been cold, only a few digits above zero in most of KELOLAND. Fortunately the winds have also been on the light side, minimizing the wind chills somewhat.

Tonight skies will be clear to partly cloudy, and it will be cold. Most places will be in the single digits below zero, though Aberdeen may bottom out around 19 below zero. Winds will be very light.

Saturday we’ll have a sunny sky East River, with a very light SE breeze and temperatures slightly warmer than today, in the single digits during the afternoon. Western South Dakota will be warmer, but will also have a chance at some late day snow. It appears snowfall amounts in western South Dakota will be fairly light.

Upper level energy will sweep across the area on Sunday, as winds change to a northwesterly direction. We will have a chance for some powdery, moisture starved snow, especially late in the day. Fortunately it will also be warmer – temporarily – with daytime highs in the mid 20s East River (near normal for this time of year) and near 40 in western South Dakota.

Next week is looking snow-free Monday through Friday. We will also have a lot of sunshine, mostly because we will have large amounts of cold, dry Canadian air incoming.

On Monday, brisk northerly winds will bring another blast of Arctic air. Even though skies will be sunny on Monday, we’ll also have a tough time warming much above the zero mark during the afternoon.

Tuesday will be very cold in the morning, in the teens or even 20 degrees below zero. Tuesday afternoon we’ll have sunshine, with highs in the single digits.

Skies will be mostly sunny Wednesday and Thursday, and temperatures will be sharply warmer, in the mid 20s East River on Wednesday and the mid 30s on Thursday, which should be the warmest day of the week. Rapid City has a shot at 50 on Thursday afternoon.

It also looks like temperatures will remain above normal  Friday through the following weekend.
