As expected, it is a sunny and very warm day across KELOLAND. The average high on Valentine’s Day is 31 degrees in Sioux Falls, but the temperature soared through the 40s today thanks to the sunshine and southwest breeze.
Due to the snowmelt putting moisture into the air, areas of fog will be possible tonight. Overnight lows will again be mild, in the teens, with a very light westerly breeze. Other than the foggy areas, skies will be partly cloudy.
Tomorrow we’ll see winds switch to the north and pick up speed. The wind will draw down colder air from the north, so temperatures will be warmest in the morning (20s to low 30s) with temperatures steady or falling during the afternoon. North winds will average 15-25 mph. A bit of energy will track across KELOLAND from west to east, so light snow will also be possible, but amounts should be under a half inch” East River and under 1” in the west.
High pressure should build back into the region for a sunny but cold Friday. Temperatures will drop a few degrees below zero Friday morning, and then warm only into the low 20s East River. Western South Dakota will recover to the mid 30s.
The weekend is looking warmer than normal for mid-February. Saturday will be clear to partly cloudy, with the mid 30s across KELOLAND. Clouds will increase on Sunday. But temperatures will mostly be in the 30s. We’ll bring a chance of snow into the region from the north and west Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.
By Monday (President’s Day) we expect to chill back into the teens with a north wind. It also appears we’ll see some snow on Monday in the breezy, colder conditions. Snowfall looks to continue into Tuesday morning as cold air becomes entrenched in the region. Tuesday morning will be subzero, with afternoon highs only in the teens.
Behind the front, we expect sunshine and chilly temperatures on Wednesday… subzero in the morning, and upper teens to low 20s for highs Wednesday afternoon.
Extended range models are still bringing much warmer air into KELOLAND for the second half of next week and the following weekend… something to look forward to.
