Cooking Classes Baking Up Business

Would you spend money to learn how to cook? For a growing number of Americans, the answer is, "Yes."

Cooking classes are baking up more participants across the country.

Do you know how to bake bread? These 7 to 12 years old do thanks to this week's baking camp at Plum's Cooking Company.

"I like to cook. I've never been to something like this. I wanted to try it out," Ben Knobloch said.

Eleven-year-old Knobloch wants to be a professional football player when he grows up, but he's dedicating this week to the kitchen. This Sioux Falls summer camp sold out quickly.

"In general they're always sold out," Instructor Gabriella Schmidt-Grimminger said.

While this event is for kids, Plum's has dozens of classes throughout the year for all different ages. It's something more businesses are mixing up because of the simmering interest.

"There's a lot of hands-on work. You can get messy with it. At the end of the day, you have a group product out of it most of the time," Schmidt-Grimminger said.

While some students are serious about their culinary skills, others do it simply for entertainment.

"I think it's a good way to bring them somewhere else instead of having them sit in front of a TV or computer all day," Schmidt-Grimminger said.

Talking about the computer, some businesses are finding a recipe for success by offering online classes. The Chef and the Dish classes start at $300.

"You think about what's actually in your food. For example, today we're making bread. You actually know what's going in your bread," Schmidt-Grimminger said.

Another reason why this camp could be a hit?

"My mom was excited because she wouldn't have to cook anymore," Knobloch said.

Which for some parents, could be worth the money.

If you're curious, the class at Plum's costs around $300. You can find a list of future events here.
