Oh My Word Makes Appearance In National Magazine

Downtown Sioux Falls

A small Sioux Falls shop is gaining national attention for its creativity and craftiness. Numerous downtown Sioux Falls storefronts have gained national attention, from C.H Pattiserie's appearance in Food and Wine magazine, to a New York times article highlighting Sanaas Gourmet Mediteranean.

But Melissa Johnson never thought it would be her business.

"I think Lauren and I both looked at this email, it was a couple days before Christmas, we're in this big rush, and I think both of us thought, 'Is that for real?!'" Johnson said.

The sender of that email was Food Network Magazine. And nope, it wasn't spam.

"But it was real! Pretty exciting, pretty incredible," Johnson said.

Johnson , the owner of Oh My Word Luxury Paperie, and her designer Lauren Halgerson are always coming up with new cards and creativity for the store.

But she never thought in a million years her team's craftiness would end up on newsstands.

"I knew that it's always been part of me, so to be able to do this is really exciting and I feel very fortunate," Halgerson said.

The magazine's April addition reached out to the store asking if it could design an Easter egg for South Dakota to appear in the magazine.

"I imagined we would water color something onto it an egg or do something like that, she had much bigger and much better ideas," Johnson said.

And a pheasant it was.

"There's so much variation in color and it makes me think of the hunters and the pastime in South Dakota," Halgerson said.

Both women say to be nationally recognized for their design work, is a tribute to the creative thinkers of Sioux Falls.

"I'm just very honored, very honored," Halgerson said.

"I wrote in a blog post that, 'Sometimes things don't go as planned, but really it's just all about the journey.' And I think that's one thing we learned through this opportunity, how we work as a team and where the journey can lead us," said Johnson.

The April edition of Food Network Magazine is on newstands across the United States now.
