Sanford To Build Golf Entertainment Facility

It could drive people to Sioux Falls from miles around.

On Thursday Sanford announced it's building a golf entertainment facility called Great Shots at the Sanford Sports Complex.

This comes just a couple of weeks after KELOLAND News told you that The Summit League headquarters and retail giant Mills Fleet Farm are also building locations at the complex.

It's almost like a golf theme park. Great Shots will have a heated, interactive driving range and the Sanford POWER Golf Academy, along with meeting space, a restaurant and a bar.

"You've got a place to go hit balls all winter long. You have a place to hang out with your buddies," Two-Time U.S. Open Golf Champion Andy North said.

North helped make the announcement. He says facilities like this help grow the golf game, which has been struggling.

"You would be surprised how many people will drive in from an hour or two hours away to come in and spend an afternoon at Great Shots," North said.

Sanford could be just teeing off on its announcements here.

"We're working with the Sioux Falls School District. They'll be bringing a high school just a quarter of a mile down the road on our property. We hope to have a championship football and championship baseball stadium here," Kelby Krabbenhoft said.

Krabbenhoft is the President and CEO of Sanford Health. We asked him why a health organization is getting into the game of land development.

"Healthcare is a great industry. It's just getting harder and harder to stay profitable in that environment. As people get older and with Medicare reimbursement and things like that, we made a decision that we'd have to look at alternative revenue sources in the future," Krabbenhoft said.

While the new facility will be a great place for experienced golfers to work on their game, Krabbenhoft says even those who aren't that good at golf could also have a lot of fun.

"I think this is going to be one of those venues that will draw people from 100 or 200 miles away," Krabbenhoft said.

"It's just the beauty of this sport. You can play as a little guy. You can play as an old guy. It's pretty neat to have that opportunity," North said.

An opportunity Sanford is taking a swing at.

The 54,000 square foot building will be in northwestern Sioux Falls on the southeast corner of Benson Road and Westport Avenue.

It will also have a kids zone with video games and other activities and is scheduled to open in late 2019.
